Damiana is known as Mexican holly in Mexico, where the powdered herb is used to make a liquor for mixing margaritas. It was also an ingredient in Pemberton's French Wine Coca, a 19th century patent medicine and precursor to the original formula for Coca Cola.
Description
Damiana, also known as Old Woman's Broom, is a small shrub native to the southwestern US, Mexico and South America. A cousin to the passionflower vine, damiana produces aromatic but bitter tasting leaves that are combined with other herbs in tea blends.

Light green and powdery, without remarkable aroma.
Cosmetic Uses
Use to make skin powders and poultices. May also be infused in carrier oil for use in salves and balms.
Safety
Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. Damiana may produce hormone-like effects and impact blood sugar. Use with caution if you have a chronic condition or take pharmaceutical medications. Do not use this herb long-term or take high dosages due to potential cyanogenic activity
